There are only only 2 types of web traffic. Paid traffic and free traffic. Meaning, you can either buy visitors or you get people to come for free.
In going the paid route to get folks to your site, you can use programs like Google Adwords and models referred to as Pay Per click. So,what happens here is that you tell Yahoo, for example, how much you can pay for each click. And depending on how strong the competition you might end up payng a lot or a not much per click. From a nickel or so per visitor to several dollars per click So obviously it can add up quick. Still people do it beacuse it’s easy, consistent and predictable traffic. It works.
Another example of a technique is the pay per impression. With this you pay per volume, you purchase a certain number of impressions typically measured in CPM – Cost Per Thousand. And there are various banner ad networks out there that you can join and upload a banner and pay regardless of how many clicks for the determined number of impressions. In this method you might get a ton of visitors or none at all.
The thing about just buying clicks is that you really want to test the results and keep an eye on the process, otherwise you might just be wasting your ad budget.
The other option when it comes to getting visitors to your site is getting FREE traffic. Free web traffic can come from the search engines which unless you’re lucky, requires knowledge of search engine optimization. People can also come from other websites. Getting links is a helpful way of getting visitors. Several other ways to get free traffic would include things like writing articles and submitting them article directories, like ezine articles.
